PGA in Scotland launch new stableford series for Members aged 50 and over

Vale of Llangollen pair Matt Davies and Gary Tweedie will fly the flag for Wales in Italy after qualifying for the final of the PGA SkyCaddie Pro-Captain Challenge.

The final of the popular competition, which carries a £22,000 prize fund, will be staged in October at the five-star Argentario Golf and Wellness Resort, the home of the PGA National Italy.

The duo booked their places in it by winning the PGA North region qualifier at Pleasington Golf Club, Blackburn, and did so in fine style.

Tweedie, the club captain who plays off nine, got them away to a flying start with a nett eagle and then Davies, the club’s head PGA pro took over.

“He had five birdies and an eagle over the next nine holes,” said Tweedie, a 62-year-old joiner. “He was on fire.”

As a result the pair were eight-under at the turn and on course to amass 46 Stableford points and finish one clear of Hale Golf Club pro Richard Booth and his partner, David Wainwright.

Davies (pictured above) insisted, however, that the triumph was anything but a one-man show and Tweedie played his part.

“He’s a good player and played very well,” he said. “He was very accurate and hit most fairways.”

Davies will be making his second appearance in the final, having represented the Welsh club at The Belfry in the 2019 showpiece.

“That was meant to be in Italy but was played at The Belfry because of Covid so it’s great to get there in the end, especially as it coincides with my 40th birthday!”

Similarly, playing in a final will not be a new experience for Tweedie. “I played in the final of a Daily Star fourball competition in Spain 20 years ago,” he explained.

“That was enjoyable but representing the club in a PGA final is very special and a great way to sign off my year as captain.”
