PGA in Scotland launch new stableford series for Members aged 50 and over

Alan Varley, who has died at the age of 74, spent five years working as an assistant at Moortown Golf Club, Leeds, before spending the rest of his career abroad, firstly in Sweden and then Germany.

He initially worked for Ted Large and then former PGA Captain Bryon Hutchinson at the Yorkshire club prior to heading to Malmo, Sweden.

An assistants’ role at Luebeck-Travemuende Golf Klub, Germany, followed and, having been elected to PGA Membership in 1976, he was appointed head professional shortly afterwards.

Alan remained at the club until he succumbed to leukaemia and during his time there his assistants included PGA Members Richard Muscroft and Mark Watkinson, who have continued to work in Germany, and former DP World Tour player Phil Sierocinski.

He was noted for his English sense of humour and his famous coaching tip ‘Hau drauf’ which means, ‘just hit the ball, don’t think too much!’

Alan is survived by Gabriele, his wife, and sons William and Frederik. The PGA extends heartfelt condolences to them and his other family members and friends on their loss.
